The murder trial of police officer Dancan Ndiema, accused of fatally shooting 13-year-old Yasin Moyo during Kenya’s COVID-19 lockdown, took an emotional turn this week as six witnesses gave testimony in court. From September 17 to 19, 2024, Yasin’s family, including his parents, two sisters, and a neighbor, recalled the harrowing events of March 30, 2020, when Yasin was shot while standing on the balcony of his home in Huruma, Nairobi.
Yasin, a Standard Eight pupil at Ndururuno Primary School, was home due to the pandemic when the fatal incident occurred. The witnesses shared heartbreaking details of Yasin’s final moments, including his cries for his mother and the family’s desperate attempts to save him. Their testimonies deeply moved those present in court, with several pauses needed as the family struggled to recount the tragedy.
The prosecution, led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), alleges that Ndiema, nicknamed “Champe,” fired the shot while enforcing the curfew in the Kiamaiko area of Huruma. Ndiema, who is out on KSh 1 million bail, has been ordered to avoid contact with witnesses. The trial is set to continue in May and July 2025, as the Moyo family, along with the public, seeks justice for Yasin.
