Nairobi, August 8, 2024 — The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) conducted a virtual hearing from the child-friendly interview room at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) building. Joshua Oonda, the accused, faces multiple charges of child pornography and online abuse.
Prosecution led by Valentine Manyasi presented the first witness, a 14-year-old victim, who testified in a safe environment designed to protect her well-being and ensure her comfort.
In April 2024, the Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Igonga launched this pioneering initiative to facilitate child-friendly interviews using technology. Supported by Lawyers Without Borders, the initiative aims to pre-record evidence from child victims to minimize secondary victimization and ensure accurate testimony.
Additionally, the ODPP has established eight more child-friendly interview rooms in Mombasa, Lamu, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kajiado, Kiambu, Kibera, and Makadara to further facilitate efficient delivery of justice to child victims.
