In a coordinated operation spearheaded by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), two tanker trucks ferrying ethanol were intercepted on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. The operation, which was intelligence-driven, led to the arrest of one driver, while the other managed to escape.

Acting on a tip-off, the multi-agency team tracked the tanker trucks with registration numbers KBJ 745M and KAK 903S, which were suspected of transporting ethanol from Mai Mahiu to Nairobi. The tankers were found parked at a garage in the Limuru Kamiruthu area. Upon arrival, the team managed to apprehend one of the drivers, Edward Nandwa Otundo. However, the second driver evaded arrest and is currently being sought by authorities.

Two tankers intercepted by police ferrying contraband ethanol

The apprehended driver was taken to Capital Hill Police Station for processing and is expected to be arraigned soon. The tankers, now under police guard, remain at the garage as investigations continue. Officers are also intensifying efforts to locate the fugitive driver and any other accomplices potentially involved in the illegal ethanol transportation.

The seizure of the ethanol-laden tankers and the arrest of the suspect highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illicit trade and tax evasion. Ethanol, often targeted in smuggling operations, is used in various industries but can also be diverted for the illegal production of illicit brews.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving the transportation of ethanol and other regulated substances. The DCI and KRA are expected to continue their investigations to determine the source and intended destination of the ethanol, as well as to identify any larger networks involved in the smuggling operation.

This incident adds to a series of similar operations aimed at curbing the illegal trade in ethanol, which has financial implications for the government in terms of lost revenue.

The police promised tha as the investigation unfolds, more details will be made available to the public.
