A Nairobi Anti-Corruption Court has convicted Simon Titus Yandi, Director of Swift Tracing and Company Limited, for soliciting and receiving a bribe from a businessman. Yandi, a private investigator, was found guilty of accepting a bribe of Ksh 30,000 from Peter Rukuwa Chege, a businessman trading in academic books, to avoid prosecution for alleged counterfeit book sales.

The court heard that Yandi was initially contracted by Brand-ID Technologies Africa to conduct surveillance and investigations on counterfeit book supplies infringing the rights of the Kenya Publishers Association. Despite his contract expiring, he continued to solicit bribes under the guise of performing these duties.

Additionally, the court found Yandi guilty of mutilating currency, having torn six 1,000 Kenya shilling notes that were part of the evidence in an ongoing bribery investigation. Prosecuting Counsel Linda Otieno presented evidence that proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, supported by testimonies from 15 witnesses.

Principal Magistrate Isabellah Barasa suspended Yandi’s bond terms and ordered his remand pending sentencing, set for Monday. The court will consider Yandi’s previous offence record before delivering the sentence.
