Kiambu Governor Responds to Extortion Claims (Ksh4.3 Billion) from Tatu City Investor Representative

By THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL REPORTER

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi was yesterday covered in rotten egg allover his face as he became embroiled in a heated exchange with Preston Mendenhall, the representative of Tatu City, over allegations of attempted extortion involving land worth Ksh 4.3 billion. The dispute centres  on the governor’s alleged demand for the investor to cede 40 acres of prime land in exchange for approving revised development plans.

Mendenhall, speaking on behalf of Tatu City, claimed that Governor Wamatangi and his CECM for Lands tried to force Tatu City to hand over the land to secure the county’s approval. Tatu City, a long-standing urban development project of 14 years  in Ruiru, Kiambu County, aims to develop a mega city with industrial and residential properties.

Governor Wamatangi’s Response

Governor Wamatangi issued a strong rebuttal, denying the extortion claims and accusing Mendenhall of spreading misinformation. He stated that the county’s intention was to ensure Tatu City set aside land for housing, schools, road expansion, and other public services to benefit low-income earners. Wamatangi emphasized that the investor’s allegations were a calculated attempt to malign the county government and its officials.

Wamatangi highlighted that Tatu City had been requested to cede 500 acres of its land to meet the evolving industrial and residential needs of the area. This included land reserved for public amenities, which the governor claimed Tatu City had failed to provide. According to Wamatangi, Tatu City’s lack of compliance with land ceding requirements was against the law and demonstrated bad faith.

Legal and Developmental Concerns

The governor’s rebuttal referenced various laws mandating the allocation of land for public purposes, including housing, schools, and road widening. Wamatangi insisted that Tatu City must act in accordance with these laws to ensure balanced development and adequate provision of public services.

The dispute between Governor Wamatangi and Tatu City raises critical questions about the balance between private investment and public welfare in urban development projects. As the situation unfolds, it will be essential to monitor how both parties navigate the legal and ethical considerations involved in land allocation and development planning in Kiambu County.
