A policewoman was among five suspected fraudsters arrested for allegedly impersonating EACC detectives in Kitui town, Kitui County. The suspects are believed to be part of a criminal gang that has been defrauding unsuspecting public officials while posing as EACC detectives carrying out investigations.
The five were cornered on Friday while undertaking a ‘search operation’ in Kitui County Government premises. They had raided the residence of the Kitui County Director of Revenue, purporting to be investigating alleged embezzlement of funds.
The Commission received an enquiry from the local OCPD and reported that the individuals were imposters, not staff of the EACC. The suspects had been deceiving unsuspecting public officials that they could by manipulate investigations into corruption in their favour.
The suspects, who were driving a white Toyota Fielder station wagon motor vehicle registration No. KDC 846X, are:
1. CPL Anne Mutheu, 46, a Police officer attached to Muthangari Police Station, Nairobi.
2. Sheddy Kakai, 37
3. Permelus Kasama, 48
4. Joseph Musembi, 34
5. David Bembe, 33
When cornered by DCI Officers who responded to the complainant’s distress call, the suspects produced a ‘search warrant’ supposedly issued at Milimani Law Courts and job cards in the names of William Kirui Rono, Meshack K. Matina, and Mary Nzilani Mwaniki, designated as Chief Executive Officer and Director of Anti-corruption Intelligence, EACC
The suspects are currently detained at Kitui Police Station pending further action.
