By THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL CORRESPONDENT
Popular newspaper columnist and social media satirist Gabriel Oguda, an avowed critic of the Kenya Kwanza government, was picked picked from his home early today by armed men believed to be police officers in the latest of abductions targeting those opposed to the Finance Bill 2024.
Oguda’s brother, Zachary, confirmed his apparent arrest on X, formerly Twitter, posting: “I can confirm that my brother has been taken by unknown gunmen from his house 5 minutes ago.”
Zachary added that continued updates on Oguda’s X account were not live as they were scheduled.
There are also reports that other social media figures including Osama Otero, Drey Mwangi, TemperCR7, Worldsmith and Hilla254, among others were also seized before the start of protests despite Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki saying the youth were free to picket as long as they stuck to the law.
The abductions came as protests erupted in Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru.
Anti-riot police used tear gas to counter the protesters amid reports they were hired by pro-government forces to cause chaos as a strategy to thwart planned demonstrations by Generation Z which have largely been peaceful.
One protester was injured outside Naivas Moi Avenue and was helped by good samaritans who took him to an ambulance belonging to the Nairobi City County.
More protesters are expected to take to the streets in the coming hours as Parliament resumes this afternoon to continue debate on the Finance Bill 2024 before voting in the Committee of the Whole House takes place tomorrow and Thursday.
