Ruto Slammed by More Religious Leaders Over “Failed Promises” as Pressure Mounts
By THE DISPATCH DIGTAL REPORTER
Religious leaders across Kenya have issued strong rebukes against President William Ruto’s government, accusing it of rampant mismanagement, unfulfilled promises, and exacerbating economic hardships. The wave of criticism began with the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), who condemned the administration for abandoning its citizens amid rising poverty, corruption, and over-taxation. Their statement described the government’s actions as a betrayal of the trust placed in it during elections.
In solidarity, the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), led by Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, echoed these sentiments, calling out the government for excessive rhetoric and a lack of meaningful action. “Too much talk and open-ended promises won’t do,” Sapit asserted, urging the leadership to prioritise service delivery and transparency. He dismissed claims that church leaders were interfering in politics, stating their duty is to hold leaders accountable when the nation’s moral compass falters.
This rare unity among religious organisations has also drawn support from Muslim leaders and the Atheists in Kenya Society. Muslim leaders in the North Rift defended the Catholic bishops, insisting that it is the moral obligation of all faith leaders to call out governance failures. Even non-religious groups like the Atheists in Kenya joined the chorus, highlighting a growing concern over the erosion of integrity in governance.
Adding to the tension, Anglican bishops led by Archbishop Sapit criticised the proposed extension of presidential terms from five to seven years, claiming it was a move to consolidate power rather than address Kenya’s pressing challenges. Similarly, delays in reforming the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and unresolved financial debts to faith-based medical institutions were highlighted as examples of the administration’s inaction.
President Ruto has pushed back against these criticisms, describing them as divisive and urging religious leaders to contribute to national peace and economic development. However, this plea has done little to quell dissent, as even previously supportive church leaders now appear disillusioned.
With public frustration growing and the possibility of mass protests looming, the president faces increasing pressure to shift from rhetoric to tangible reforms. Religious leaders warn that continued inaction could lead to widespread civil disobedience, further destabilising an already fragile economic and political landscape.
