Former US President Barack Obama is set to launch a leadership school at the University of Nairobi, which will be built along the lines of the Kennedy School of Leadership in Harvard.

“I requested him to assist us set up a school in the fashion of Kennedy School of Leadership in Havard but this time to be a school of leadership in Nairobi University and I asked him, let us call it Barack Obama School of Leadership in the Univerity of Nairobi and he agreed and he will come here next year,” President William Ruto announced on Thursday night in Nairobi during the launch of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association Strategic Plan.

He added: “And he has undertaken that he is going to mobilise support for a sustainable school of leadership because leadership is serious and we want you guys to be better than us.”

And for the second time in a  week, Ruto promised to mentor young leaders, pointing out that they have the power to influence the present.

He said so powerful, brilliant and focused are the youth that they are also “our future”.

“We are committed to mentoring Kenya’s young leadership to enhance their active participation in governance,” he explained.

The President urged young leaders to embrace participatory leadership and enhance their legislation, representation and oversight roles.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association Gitonga Mukunji, among other leaders, were present.

This is not the first time Ruto is asking youthful leaders to bid their time especially in light of the fight between Gachagua and MPs from the Mt Kenya region who want Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro to be the running mate in 2027.

Speaking at Nakuru Boys High School grounds on Sunday during the Akorino Annual Prayer Conference, the President told the young leaders that their political future was bright and assured them of his commitment to mentor them.

The President said the success of any leadership is in mentoring the youth to become better leaders.

“We like assisting other leaders because we shall be happier if we get better leaders than us. That is how we shall have a better country,” said President Ruto.

“I want to assure young leaders of our commitment to mentor them to become better leaders in future. However, we should respect one another,” he said.
