Gacagua’s loud complaints against Kenya Kwanza leadership seem to have provided the impetus for the move to try to eject him from the No. 2 seat
By THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL REPORTER
A motion has been filed in the National Assembly seeking the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and misuse of public funds. The motion, filed soon after ODM leader Raila Odinga entered into an agreement with President William Ruto for dialogue on the “way forward” for the country, aims to prevent Gachagua from seeking public office in the next elections.
Observers noted that the motion was filed with the belief that it could garner the support of Raila’s ODM in both the National Assembly and Senate to achieve the required two-thirds majority for the impeachment of a President or Deputy President. Kalonzo Musyoka, a member of the Azimio Alliance, has already declared that his party members would support Gachagua’s impeachment if it came to a vote in Parliament.
However, the motion could be thwarted if Gachagua chooses to resign before it progresses, as a successful impeachment could bar him from participating in any future elections for public office.
