The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has condemned President William Ruto for denying awareness of police abductions during the Gen Z-led protests against his administration. The Commission labeled Ruto’s remarks as misleading, insisting that the president was fully informed of the forced disappearances. On International Day of the Disappeared, KHRC released the names of victims allegedly abducted or killed, demanding accountability. Those names were published here in The Dispatch Digital (KNCHR Publishes List of Gen Zs Killed by Police in Protests).
Despite the KHRC’s accusations, Ruto, during a town hall meeting in Kisumu, stated he had no knowledge of abductions during the recent protests. He urged families affected to provide names to the Ministry of Interior for investigation, promising firm action against those responsible. Ruto emphasized that no Kenyan should suffer due to their political stance and reiterated the government’s commitment to human rights.
KHRC’s statement follows the president’s directive to fast-track investigations into abduction cases, but the Commission remains skeptical of the government’s resolve. The ongoing tension underscores the complex interplay between civil rights organizations and government accountability.
