NAIROBI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Chinese smartphone company Infinix has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to launch an innovative AI robot project in Kenya. The CogLabs project, spearheaded by Infinix Kenya’s brand manager Michael Zeng, is based at the University of Nairobi, Kenya’s oldest institution of higher learning.

CogLabs is an AI robot and machine learning educational platform that leverages mobile phones as the brains of robots. This initiative aims to inspire creativity and provide accessible AI experiences for the next generation. According to Zeng, the CogLabs approach involves guiding users through building robots using 3D-printed parts and second-hand phones, and training them with teachable machines and programming languages like Scratch.

“CogLabs is a low-cost innovation project, offering an affordable alternative to current educational robots on the market, which are often expensive and complex,” Zeng stated in a press release from Nairobi on Friday.

Joan Nadal, master trainer of UNESCO’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Project, highlighted that CogLabs aims to promote STEM education, foster AI literacy, and empower young innovators. The project will benefit from UNESCO’s capacity-building workshops designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of AI technology.
