Five police officers—Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto, and Gerald Mutuku—have been arraigned at the Milimani Court for their alleged involvement in the escape of 13 remandees from the Gigiri police station in Nairobi. The escape involved 12 Eritrean nationals and Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in multiple murders whose victims’ bodies were found in Kware, a residential area in Nairobi.
The officers are persons of interest in the case due to their roles in custody at the station during the escape. They appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances that led to the jailbreak.
This case raises serious concerns about the safety and security protocols in Nairobi police stations and their ability to maintain control over high-profile detainees. Further hearings will likely determine if the officers were directly involved in facilitating the escape or if it was due to negligence.
Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, and Deputy Inspector General, Eliud Lagat, addressed the media at Gigiri Police Station yesterday, revealing that eight officers, including the local OCPD, had been interdicted in connection with the incident. “We are conducting a thorough investigation into how these suspects managed to escape and whether there was any inside collaboration,” Masengeli stated.
