The National Assembly has officially endorsed Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth as the Director-General for Health, following a glowing recommendation from the Health Committees of both the National Assembly and the Senate.

In their report, the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health and the Senate Standing Committee on Health affirmed Dr. Amoth’s extensive knowledge and experience, deeming him highly suitable for the role. Having served as Acting Director-General for four years, he has met all statutory and constitutional prerequisites for the position.

Endebess MP Hon. (Dr.) Robert Pukose, chair of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health, presented a special motion on Wednesday, emphasizing that Dr. Amoth fully complied with the requirements to perform the duties of Director-General for Health.

“The Committees, having considered the suitability, competence, experience, and integrity of Dr. Amoth, recommend that Parliament approves his nomination for the role of Director-General for Health under Section 16 of the Health Act, (Cap. 241),” said Dr. Pukose.

Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Hon. Patrick Munene Ntwiga seconded the motion, lauding Dr. Amoth for his patience and dedication, noting his long stint in an acting capacity. “We finally have a man in Dr. Amoth who will lead the Ministry of Health as the Director-General, offering solid counsel and advice to the Cabinet Secretary,” said Hon. Munene.

Hon. Munene highlighted Dr. Amoth’s extensive experience, knowledge, and passion for the Ministry of Health, as well as his global networks that would benefit the country. He stressed the importance of Dr. Amoth guiding the new Cabinet Secretary for Health, should she be approved.

Majority Party Whip Hon. Silvanus Osoro praised Dr. Amoth for his standout leadership during the COVID-19 crisis, noting that true leaders emerge in times of crisis. “During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Amoth emerged as a prominent figure, actively campaigning against the virus and guiding the public on safe practices,” said Hon. Osoro.

Dr. Amoth’s extensive experience spans over 30 years in health systems management, reproductive health, and public health at various levels. Since January 2020, he has been acting as the Director-General for Health, during which time he developed key national and international health policies and guidelines, including the Universal Health Coverage roadmap for Kenya and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He exhibited leadership expertise by representing the Ministry of Health at key forums, conferences, technical working groups, and advisory boards,” stated Dr. Pukose.
