Francis Ng’ang’a Gaitho, a blogger and social media influencer critical of President William Ruto’s government, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki today to face charges of false publications and cyber harassment.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reported that Gaitho, who is also a politician, was arrested on July 17, 2024. He faces charges under Section 22(1) and Section 27(1)(a) of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act No. 5 of 2018.
The prosecution, representing the State, informed the court that on July 15, 2024, at approximately 14:00 hours, Gaitho allegedly published false information on social media with the intent that it would be considered or acted upon as authentic. Additionally, he is accused of publishing false information about Jairus Onkundi Morwabe, knowing that this would cause Morwabe apprehension or fear of violence, as well as damage or loss to his property.
Gaitho pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh. 30,000. The case is set for mention on August 1, 2024, for pre-trial proceedings.
