Arrests and Seizures as Crackdown on Illicit Drugs Intensifies

By THE DISPATCH DIGITAL REPORTER

In a significant escalation of the ongoing crackdown on illicit drugs, law enforcement officers have made several arrests and seized large quantities of marijuana. At a roadblock along the Nambale-Busia road, two traffickers, including a 17-year-old juvenile, were apprehended with marijuana valued at Sh1,320,000.

The suspects, Okuchil Ayubu, 40, and the teenage offender, were travelling in a Toyota Hiace Matatu when they were stopped by officers at the roadblock. Upon inspection, five bales of marijuana weighing 44 kilos were discovered in their possession.

In a separate incident in Biamati, along the Mutemorabu-Boembu road, vigilant citizens alerted police officers from Isebania Police Station about traffickers hiding sacks of marijuana in a nearby bush, ready for transport. The swift response led to a major bust, with officers recovering five and a half sacks of marijuana weighing a staggering 260 kilograms, estimated to be worth Sh7,800,000. The suspects, however, managed to escape into a nearby thicket, evading capture.

The suspects who were apprehended are currently in police custody and are being processed ahead of their arraignment. Meanwhile, efforts continue to track down those who evaded arrest. The recovered narcotics have been secured as evidence.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has expressed its gratitude to the public for their valuable tips and reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking.
