After firing the Cabinet and starting talks with, among others, Raila Odinga of ODM on the constitution of another Cabinet, President William Ruto must look at the tribal appointments favouring well-connected and elite members of his Kalenjin tribe at the expense of others

By THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL REPORTER

One of the burning issues that has no been loudly addressed but is simmering below the surface of unrests in Kenya are the several appointments that were made by President William Ruto’s top executives coming from his Kalenjin tribe.

While many of those appointments are merited, they fly in the face of the Constitutional requirement that there must be ethnic representation in appointments made to the public service, which must reflect the face and character of Kenya. However, in total disregard to the Constitution, appointments have been made of people who come from Ruto’s Kalenjin tribe even in instances where they perform less impressively than candidates from other tribes, especially if those candidates are from minority tribes, like the Abakuria, Iteso, Pokomo, or Ngazija.

The appointments so far made by the Ruto administration have placed the control of key institutions and parastatals in the hands of one ethnic group in a country with 46 tribes, which demand to be given a piece of the action.

John Mwangi, Kimaru, a worker at a parastatal, told THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL, “we don’t want these people sacked; we want them to give way and be given other posit9ons within those organisations if they qualify. It is not practical to have one tribe holding all the top positions and the rest given token appointments at the lower levels. When that happens, you find the language being spoken at these institutions is one vernacular whole there are 45 other vernaculars in Kenya. That needs to stop.”
