Nairobi, Kenya – Today marked a significant moment in Kenyan and continental politics as President William Ruto officially launched the candidacy of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) at State House, Nairobi. The event, attended by a constellation of African leaders, underscores Kenya’s ambition to lead the AUC, with Odinga’s candidacy aiming to replace the outgoing chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, whose term concludes early next year.

The launch was not merely a formality but a strategic move, with President Ruto describing Odinga as a “visionary Pan-Africanist” and highlighting his extensive experience and deep understanding of both African and global dynamics. Ruto’s endorsement was not merely symbolic; it set the stage for a robust campaign, emphasising Odinga’s credentials as ideal for leading the AUC into a more central role in global affairs.

The event was graced by several heads of state from the East African Community (EAC), including Presidents Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and Salva Kiir of South Sudan, among others. Their presence not only adds weight to Odinga’s bid but also signals regional support, crucial for his campaign. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, a notable figure in African politics, was also in attendance, further bolstering the international profile of the event.

Raila Odinga, known for his longstanding involvement in Kenyan politics, has been positioning himself as a continental leader, aiming to leverage his experience in governance, mediation, and regional diplomacy. His campaign is not just about personal ambition but is framed as Kenya’s bid to lead Africa at a time when the continent faces numerous challenges, from economic development to peace and security.

The launch comes with strategic planning already in motion. A joint secretariat in Nairobi, combining government strategists with Odinga’s team, will spearhead the campaign, focusing on shuttle diplomacy and regional campaigns. This approach aims to secure endorsements and support across the continent, leveraging Kenya’s diplomatic relations and Odinga’s personal networks.

Odinga’s candidacy, however, does not go uncontested. He faces competition from other prominent African figures, each with their backing and strategies. Yet, today’s launch in Nairobi, with its high-profile attendees and the backing of President Ruto, positions Odinga as a formidable candidate in the race set for February 2025.

This event in Nairobi not only marks the beginning of a significant political campaign but also reflects Kenya’s broader geopolitical ambitions within the African continent. As the campaign unfolds, all eyes will be on how Odinga’s bid influences not just Kenyan but also African Union politics, potentially shaping the future direction of continental governance and policy.
