The National Alternative Leadership Forum (NALF) has called on the Senate to initiate comprehensive impeachment proceedings against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. In a press statement signed by NALF Chairman Fwamba NC Fwamba, Deputy Chairman Ouma Odera, Secretary General Cathy Irungu, and council members Silas Otuke, Mwaniki Maina, Mwenda Gatobu, and Polycarp Meyo, the group urged immediate action following Governor Mwangaza’s recent impeachment by the Meru County Assembly on August 8, 2024.

“This ongoing crisis, marked by persistent governance failures and unresolved conflicts, requires immediate and decisive action to restore effective leadership in Meru County,” the statement read.

NALF accused Governor Mwangaza of financial mismanagement, abuse of office, and failure to uphold principles of transparency and accountability. The group noted that previous impeachment attempts by the Meru County Assembly were overturned by the Senate, a decision they believe has exacerbated administrative dysfunction in the county.

The forum highlighted the prolonged conflict between Governor Mwangaza and the County Assembly Members (MCAs), which they claim has severely hindered the delivery of essential services to Meru County residents. According to NALF, this persistent squabbling violates the principles of devolution outlined in Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, particularly Articles 174, 176, 179, 192, and 231, which emphasize public participation, decentralized governance, and accountability.

NALF demanded the Senate promptly address the impeachment case and, if the motion is upheld, called for the suspension of the Meru County Government, with the National Government assuming temporary oversight to ensure the continuity of essential services and restore effective governance.

The forum called on all stakeholders to support these measures to ensure accountability, restore integrity in governance, and uphold the constitutional promises of devolution in Meru County.
