A man who was victimized by police after being snitched on by a Cooperative Bank guard ended up closing his account, feeling betrayed by the bank. The man, who identifies himself as David on the social media platform X, said he had gone to Cooperative Bank to transact some business when he witnessed police brutality against two young men on skateboards doing deliveries in the city. The men were beaten by police officers who then walked away after committing the violence.

According to David, he was at the Cooperative Bank Bazaar branch along Moi Avenue when he noticed two men who were doing deliveries on skateboards being beaten before being arrested and bundled into a police truck. “These two guys skating were doing deliveries around The Bazaar. One was injured by the police, who then walked away. So, we were there asking why they were arrested, and then that lorry pulled up and they were taken away. If you know them, please tag them or post their names,” he wrote.

David said he had gone to the bank to activate his account, and after being drawn to the commotion outside, he retrieved his cell phone to record the event. As he made noise to attract public attention to rescue the young men being brutalized and arrested, he was chased by the bank’s security guards. He went back inside and confronted them, but the guards attacked him and were in the process of handing him over to the police when he found an opportunity and ran for his life.

“I was inside Cooperative Bank, Moi Avenue, to activate my bank account. Immediately I got in, my phone network went out. I stepped out to try and get a signal to pay for whatever charges, then found these boys getting arrested. As I was recording and trying to make noise, the bank’s security chased me away. I went back in and called them out. They manhandled me and tried to hand me over to the police. I ran like hell. I am closing my account,” he explained.

After fleeing, he encountered thugs armed with sticks who claimed they were guarding businesses from being broken into by hooligans posing as demonstrators. However, the thugs were themselves taking advantage of the situation to rob and pickpocket innocent pedestrians.

“They [armed thugs] are asking everyone to leave. Those armed goons pretending to protect businesses are working with the police to pick up people. Even boda boda guys have been chased away.”

After his ordeal, David returned to the bank and closed his account. He shared pictures of the closed account on his X handle and left the bank with a parting shot: “I’m back in. Account closed. @Coopbankenya The security with AP uniform, I hope you continue suffering till you die.”
