The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Yagnesh Devani, the principal suspect in the KES 7.6 billion Triton Oil scandal. Devani, apprehended from his offices in Nairobi, is set to appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court to face charges.

Devani, who had connections with senior officials of the Mwai Kibaki administration, including Raila Odinga, the then Energy Minister, and former Vice President Moody Awori, fled to the United Kingdom when his Triton fuel empire collapsed. His return to Kenya was under the assumption he would not face prosecution. However, his arrest by the EACC suggests a fallout with certain state officials and possibly a failure to pay off influential figures in a country where justice is often for sale to the highest bidder.

In a recent development, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, withdrew one of the cases against Devani to allow his office to proceed with another case where Devani had been charged alongside two others.
