Nairobi, Kenya – In a dramatic series of events, detectives from Nairobi’s regional Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and Operations unit re-arrested Shailesh Babubhai Mistry, who had earlier escaped from lawful custody. Mistry, the director of Cateyes Customs Limited, had initially been detained at Tamasha Bar and Restaurant in Karen by DCI Karen detectives and escorted to Karen Police Station.
During a search of Mistry’s vehicle, registration number KCQ 888N, officers discovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. The recovered items included:
- One Sig Sauer P22 pistol
- Two Canik pistols without working parts
- Six empty pistol magazines
- Thirty-three .38 special hollow point rounds
- Forty-three 9mm x 19 rounds
- Nine .45 auto rounds
- Two hundred and three .223 rounds
- Twelve 357 sig rounds
- Forty-four 380 auto rounds
- Twenty .38 special ARX rounds
- Twelve .308 win rounds
- Sixty .470 nitro rounds
- One hundred and four 12 gauge shotgun rounds
- Thirty-seven 3006 SPRG rounds
Later, a search at Mistry’s residence in Southlands Estate, Jordan Court House No. 411, yielded additional discoveries: one Benelli shotgun, one hundred and seventy .223 rounds, and forty 7.62 x 39 rounds of ammunition. Mistry presented an expired civilian firearm certificate during the search.
While in custody at Karen Police Station, Mistry requested access to his vehicle to retrieve a sweater. Instead, he locked himself inside, drove out of the station at high speed, and injured an officer in the process. A swift manhunt was launched, and Mistry was intercepted in the Kasarani area based on intelligence leads.
Upon his re-arrest, a search of Mistry’s vehicle revealed further ammunition: three pistol magazines (two loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition each and one loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition) and nine slag 12 gauge shotgun rounds.
Mistry has been placed back in custody, pending arraignment. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their efforts to maintain public safety.
