Bleeding Gums? Why You Should See a Dentist Fast!

Bleeding gums are a common but often overlooked issue that can signal a variety of health problems and you should see a dentist to save yourself from more serious disease.

By Dr. SIBUTI RIRO, CONSULTANT PERIODONTIST

While it may seem minor, bleeding gums is common but this condition can be an early warning sign of more serious dental issues like gingivitis or periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth, that is gums and the alveolar bone. Understanding the causes, prevention methods, and treatment options for bleeding gums is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health.

What Are Bleeding Gums?

Bleeding gums occur when the soft tissue around the teeth becomes irritated or inflamed,
leading to blood being released, especially during brushing or flossing. This condition can be
accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, swelling, and tenderness in the gums. While
occasional bleeding may not be a cause for alarm, persistent or severe bleeding should be
addressed promptly

Causes of Bleeding Gums

Poor Oral Hygiene
One of the most common causes of bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene. When plaque and
tartar build up along the gum line, they can cause the gums to become inflamed and bleed.
Regular brushing and flossing are essential to remove plaque and prevent gum disease.

Gingivitis and Periodontitis
Gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease, is characterized by inflammation and bleeding of
the gums. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more severe condition that can
lead to tooth loss. Both conditions are primarily caused by plaque buildup, but factors like
smoking and poor nutrition can exacerbate them.

Medications
Certain medications, such as blood thinners and some prescription drugs, can increase the
likelihood of gum bleeding. These medications can interfere with the blood’s ability to clot,
leading to more frequent bleeding episodes.

Other Health Conditions
Systemic health conditions such as diabetes, blood disorders, and vitamin deficiencies
(especially vitamin C and K) can also contribute to bleeding gums. These conditions affect the
body’s ability to heal and maintain healthy tissues, including the gums.

Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause can make gums more
sensitive and prone to bleeding. These hormonal fluctuations can increase blood flow to the
gums, making them more susceptible to irritation.

Prevention and Treatment

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene
Proper oral hygiene is the cornerstone of preventing bleeding gums. This includes:
-Effective toothbrushing: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush at
least twice a day.

-Flossing: Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and along the
gum line.

Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and check-ups
to catch any issues early.

Dietary Considerations

A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for gum health. Foods high in vitamin C
and K, such as citrus fruits and leafy greens, can help maintain strong, healthy gums.

Addressing Underlying Health Conditions
If bleeding gums are caused by an underlying health condition, such as diabetes or a vitamin
deficiency, it’s crucial to manage these conditions with the help of a healthcare professional.
Proper management can significantly reduce the incidence of gum bleeding.

When to See a Dentist
If your gums continue to bleed despite maintaining good oral hygiene, or if you experience
other symptoms like persistent bad breath or loose teeth, it’s important to see a dentist.
Professional evaluation and treatment can help prevent more serious complications.
Surgical Options: In severe cases of periodontitis, surgical interventions like flap surgery or bone
grafts may be necessary.

Finally…
Bleeding gums should never be ignored, as they can be a sign of underlying health issues. By
maintaining good oral hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and seeking professional care when needed, you can keep your gums healthy and prevent serious dental problems. Remember, a
healthy smile starts with healthy gums.
