Protests Planned Across Kenyan Counties: A Look at the Key Hotspots

By THEDISPATCH.DIGITAL REPORTER

Kisumu: Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, despite not being overly politically active, has earned a reputation as a hardworking leader and does not face significant opposition. Residents seem content to see him complete his term. Most of the protest activity is expected to be on the Kisumu-Nyamasaria road and in the Kondele area, with no anticipated occupation of county offices located in the town center.

Siaya: Governor James Orengo has openly opposed dialogue with President Ruto’s government, arguing that it would only prolong its survival. This stance contrasts with that of Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, who supports talks and ODM joining a reconstituted government. Dr. Oginga’s position is seen as a betrayal by many ODM supporters and members.

Nairobi: Known as the hotbed of demonstrations, Nairobi has seen heavy police and military deployment to manage protests, which are expected to be violent. The police have been criticized for using excessive force, while the military has shown restraint. Activist Khalif Kairo has called on Gen Z to stay at home, but some are still expected to protest against politicians’ talks to share national jobs instead of addressing real challenges. Concerns have risen about the state hiring thugs to discredit genuine protestors, with businesses closing in response.

Migori: Despite Raila Odinga’s support for President Ruto and his allies urging restraint, Migori town is expected to be a protest hotspot. By 9:00 am, protestors had closed the bridge splitting Migori, burning tires and blocking access. Local Governor Ochilo Ayacko has deployed youths to protect county headquarters amid allegations of his arrogance, centralization of resources, and awarding lucrative tenders to relatives.

Mombasa: Morning calm prevailed with police deployed throughout the town, and citizens went about their business. However, it is still early to determine if this calm will hold throughout the day, with most Gen Z youth staying home.

Embu: After the June protests saw more than 40 county government cars set on fire, Embu youth may be calmer now. Governor Cecily Mbarire, once popular, is now criticized as the face of the Ruto government’s incompetence and corruption in Embu.

Other Key Areas: Watch for potential unrest in Githurai, Kiambu, Kakamega, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kirinyaga, Nakuru, and Eldoret as the situation develops.
