By THE DISPATCH DIGITAL REPORTER

In a significant operation against wildlife trafficking, a multi-agency team, including detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Serious Crime Unit and officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), successfully seized 84 kilograms of ivory and apprehended a suspect in the Kambu area of Kibwezi sub-county. The 57-year-old suspect, Sila Maweu, was captured during an intelligence-led ambush, while three accomplices managed to escape.

The operation represents a crucial advancement in the ongoing battle against the illegal trade of endangered wildlife species. The recovered ivory, a vital trophy in the illicit market, underscores the persistent threat faced by Kenya’s wildlife. Authorities are intensifying efforts to track down the escaped suspects and ensure they face justice.

Maweu was promptly arraigned before the JKIA Law Court, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of dealing in endangered wildlife species, among other charges. The court has scheduled the case for mention on August 26, 2024.

The DCI has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing all involved individuals to justice, emphasizing that no resources will be spared in the ongoing search for the fugitives.
