In a shocking development, a senior police officer shot and injured a magistrate at Makadara law courts in Nairobi after she cancelled his wife’s bail bond.

Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, the OCS at Londiani Police Station in Bomet County, opened fire at principal magistrate Monicah Kivuti after she cancelled bond for Jennifer Wairimu, in a case in which she is charged with obtaining Sh2.9 million by false pretenses.

The magistrate was injured in the hip and was rushed to hospital alongside three other police officers injured in the ensuing melee. Kipruto was fatally shot by a fellow officer.

“During an open court session earlier today, the Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond. Immediately after this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the Magistrate and injured her in the hip,” a statement issued by the Judiciary Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya read.

She urged all court users to remain composed as law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the matter.
The statement further assured all judicial officers, staff, and court users of their safety and security.

The Judiciary pledged to enhance security protocols for civilians visiting the courts, including implementing measures that would not require security officers to be armed while performing their duties.
